The Norfolk villages of East and West Rudham are located in the Kings Lynn district of the county. Despite being small, East Rudham had its own railway station on the Kings Lynn to Melton Constable line, and in the 19th century the villages held their own steeplechase meeting which took place on Wednesday 24th April 1839. The three mile race, with catch weights, took place over good hunting ground where runners faced 23 demanding leaps. After starting in fields on the edge of the village, the runners faced 3 easy fences before a large fourth fence, positioned on the hard road, caused Marengo to fall. Three quarters of a mile from home, after Kate had fallen, Mungo took up the running and made for home with an unassailable lead. However, his rider mistook the winning flag and pulled up 200 yards from the winning line, handing victory to Mr Thompson’s Mayflower. |
